Pyramids

Uniquely German, pyramids remind us of the evergreens which grace our homes during Christmas. The act of bringing trees into the home began in the 16th century as a German custom and spread to the US, most likely, through the Pennsylvania Dutch. Evergreens are reminders of life continuing through the harshness of winter, and they are also connected with the Paradise trees in religious plays. Some believe that trees were brought into the home as an act of piety.

When trees were scarce or the price of timber too high, wooden pyramids were built to take their place. Like the living trees, these pyramids are traditionally decorated with candles and figurines (usually in religious cr裚es or village scenes).

Pyramids always remind me of the ingenuity of the Erzgebirge people -- constantly innovating new ways to turn mining cranks through centuries of hands-on experience. Pyramids are no less cleverly designed. As the heated air rises from the lighted candles, it causes the fans and scenes to turn. The ornate scenes and decorative trim provides a way for craftsmen to bring out the best in their artistry. Every detail draws from both the exquisite skill and the inventive mind of the artist, creating a product that is pure magic.
