Angels are beloved throughout the world as harbingers of hope and bearers of good tidings, joy, wonder and light. In the Erzgebirge (“ore mountains”) region of Saxony, many worked daily in the darkness of mines. In the isolation and forced leisure of the dark winter months, it is not surprising to find that light-bearing angles were a favored subject of early carvers.
