HISTORY: The Lotte Sievers-Hahn Workshop celebrated their 85th anniversary in 2014. The family-run workshop has a tradition of making striking limewood figures -- their signature. Each figure is an original -- carved entirely by hand and painted in rich oil colors. As such they are extremely collectible and remain popular gifts. We carry the crèches (nativity scene figures). Although these figures have their roots in the Erzgebirge tradition, their designs are quite unique among the folk art tradition.

The Nativity Collection is growing in popularity and is being rediscovered by collectors. Figures are treasured in families for decades and now the grandparents collect for their grandchildren, or children for their children or other family members. I am delighted to hear the stories and provide the same beautifully carved figurines.

Lotte Sievers, grew up in the state of Lower Saxonia in North Germany;  she was trained traditionally as a toy maker in Gruenhainichen, Erzgebirge. The School of Gruenhainichen was famous for their typical carving style, setting the figures apart from the roundness of the lathe turned figures. Lotte Sievers-Hahn developed her characteristic carving style and chose to make the Nativity her personal signature. Her extensive collection of people and animals around the Nativity depict her native farming environment with the characteristic barns of Lower Saxonia. Lotte Sievers-Hahn figures are unique among the folk art collections available today. All of her hand-carved figures were (and still are) crafted from their signature limewood -- a superior medium for carving. Often used by Renaissance sculptors, this wood’s fine, dense grain provides heft to the figures and takes up oil paints exceptionally well.
